The University of Maine Men’s Ice Hockey team just wrapped up their anual media day, giving us our first hands-on look at the 2012-13 team.

The buzz around the Alfond was that both the returning players and freshman are in “incredible” shape and are bigger, faster, and stronger than last year’s team. Sophomore defenseman Jake Rutt believes this years team will outperform last years despite the loss of several key members. Maine was picked fifth in the Hockey East preseason coaches poll and all indications show they will be ranked between 17-20 when the first USCHO.com poll is released Oct. 1.

The 23 ranked University of Maine Black Bear football team takes on the Albany Great Danes tonight for the 2012 home opener. Maine is coming off of two contrasting weekends, getting blown out by Boston College to start the season and then returning the favor against Bryant, upending them 51-7.

A look at the Great Danes

Albany’s offense has been impressive to start the season, putting up no less than 24 points in their first three contests. The Great Danes come to Orono with a 2-1 record with wins against Colgate and Robert Morris. Last weekend, Albany nearly upset fourth ranked Youngstown State, losing a heartbreaker 31-24. Albany leads the all-time series 3-2 and are ready to show the CAA that will belong in the conference when they make the jump next season.

Marcus Wasilewski went 20-42 with 62 yards and two interceptions in his first career start as the Black Bears fell 34-3 to the Boston College Eagles.

It was not the start Wasilewski and the Black Bears hoped for as the Eagles of the ACC took advantage of their weaker opponent. There were a lot of questions for Maine going into this game with all the roster turn over from a season ago, questions that could not be fully answered against an FBS opponent.

Maine kicked the scoring off with a Brian Harvey 19 yard field goal to give Maine a 3-0 lead.

Those would be the only points the Black Bear’s put up all afternoon.

BC came out hot after a sloppy first quarter as QB Chase Rettig hooked up with Spiffy Evans for a three yard touchdown pass to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead.
