Bryan Roche is a graduate of the University of Maine with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Throughout his time at UMaine, Bryan developed a well-rounded background in media and communications. This page serves as a collection of his work.
For four years, Bryan served as video coordinator for UMaine’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, where he was in charge of all things video. Early on in his education, Bryan was a post-production and editing intern with Foxboro Cable Access. Bryan completed UMaine’s digital journalism capstone courses during the 2010-11 school year. He regularly covered the 2010 Maine Gubernatorial race and alternative energy use in Maine for Mobile Maine News, the class’ news publication.
During his final two years in school, Bryan turned his attention to radio. In September of 2011, Bryan was hired by WMEB 91.9 FM to be the station’s Production Director. As Production Director, Bryan was in charge of producing all on-air audio elements, show promotions, local and community event promotions, public service announcements and any additional audio content needed by station DJ’s and sports broadcasters. As soon as Bryan joined WMEB, he also began working with the station’s sports department in the hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster. After his first week in the department, Bryan found himself in a broadcast booth for the first time covering UMaine football as the color commentator. Bryan would remain in this role for the rest of the season and got the chance to cover the team during their 2011 Football Championship Subdivision playoff run. During the 2011-12 season, Bryan called eight men’s ice hockey games and served as social media reporter during the team’s run in the 2012 Hockey East tournament. In 2012-13, Bryan was the full time play-by-play broadcaster for WMEB’s coverage of Maine football and men’s ice hockey. Bryan has also done play-by-play for UMaine baseball, softball and women’s ice hockey. Bryan was also a regular host of sports department programing, including Tape-to-Tape, a two-hour weekly program that provides in-depth coverage of Maine men’s hockey, plus the rest of college hockey and the NHL.
In an effort to expand WMEB’s coverage of UMaine athletics and provide more broadcasting opportunities, Bryan created wmebsports.com, the official website of the sports department. The website provides news, video and audio highlights, analysis, links to social media and podcasts of WMEB programing. The website is also home to WMEB Plus, the online alternate channel of WMEB sports. WMEB Plus was created by Bryan in January of 2012 to broadcast Maine men’s hockey vs. the University of Vermont. It is still used today as the exclusive home of UMaine women’s ice hockey and as the home to any broadcast that conflicts with another game or WMEB 91.9 FM programing. Bryan helped develop social media reporting for WMEB Sports broadcasts, a duty that is usually held by the sideline reporter/third man.
Bryan’s other significant contribution to WMEB was the summer 2012 overhaul and catalog update to the station’s automation music system, or RoboDJ. The update provides seamless playback for when a live DJ is not present and also adds new music and production elements to the rotation.
After graduation, Bryan accepted an internship with Major League Lacrosse and the league’s radio station, MLL Radio. Bryan covers the Denver Outlaws, hosting a weekly program that provided news and analysis, game breakdowns, and interviews from Outlaws players and coaches. Bryan also hosts “MLL This Week”, a weekly one-hour program with news from around the league, game previews, and interviews with the biggest names in the sport. Studio coverage of the “MLL Radio Game of the Week” is anchored by Bryan, and he provides play-by-play commentary for select regular season games. Bryan was the play-by-play voice of MLL Radio’s coverage of Championship Weekend 2013. Bryan returns to MLL radio for the 2014 season to reprise his role as lead play-by-play broadcaster and studio host. New in 2014, Bryan will host MLL Radio’s weekly news and highlight program, “MLL News.”
In March 2014, Bryan joined the Northeast Sports Network as a play-by-play broadcaster primarily covering Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. So far, Bryan has called Bowdoin women’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse, and baseball for NSN.
Later on in the month, Bryan would join HIMSS Media in a temporary role as a Digital Operations Assistant. While in this role, Bryan served as lead editor of the HIMSS-branded Business Edge, Corporate Connection, Information Xchange and Clinical Informatics Insights e-newsletters. Bryan also performed the role of Web Producer for the HIMSSWire and HIMSS Future Care sites.
